Welcome Back - Wednesday, January 06, 2010
We hope every one had a safe and enjoyable holiday and new year!
Leal Book Bin
The Leal Book Bin is a free used book exchange for Leal students. If your family has appropriate children’s books in Spanish or English that you are finished with and would like to donate to the Book Bin, there is a tub in the front hall to put them in. If your student would like to have one of our donated books, they are welcome to come and choose one to take home. They can then bring it back when they are done or they are welcome to adopt these books and keep them permanently. Available books are in bins tucked into the cubby near the office, just look for the “Free Books” sign. If you have any questions, please contact Amy Hassinger at 384-7735.
WALK-A-THON Update
Thank You! A very special thank you goes out to Judy Diers who did a super job organizing the whole Walk-a-thon event. We truly appreciate her tremendous efforts on behalf of the PTA and Leal school!

Many pledges and donations have come in. we are still collecting money, so if you still have pledges out or would like to make a donation, please send it in with your child. Make checks out to the Leal PTA.

Minutes for Leal PTA Meeting September 14, 2009

Welcome/Call to Order President Becky Mead called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm.

Approval of Minutes Secretary Carolyn Butterfield submitted minutes from the May 11 meeting. Ann Fouke motioned to approve the minutes as amended, changing messages to massages under President’s Report. Andrea Hooey seconded, all approved.

Principal Report Spencer Landsman reported that we have some new staff: Tracy Barker, Spanish-speaking second grade teacher; Lisa Ferguson, second grade teacher; Nadinne Portella, Intermediate Spanish and ESL teacher; and Tricia Kassem, psychologist. Marissa Suits, an additional Title One teacher, will start soon. The new 8:15am start time came from Central office, to standardize start and end times for all elementary schools.

The halls are less crowded due students entering and leaving multiple doors. Individual ISAT reports from last year will be sent home soon.

October 2 is the Time Capsule assembly during school and open house from 5-7pm. The time capsule was buried 28 years ago. There’s a possibility that another time capsule will be buried this year during the Fun Fair. The Time Capsule Open House committee is expecting many Leal alumni and former staff at the open house and is requesting funds for refreshments from the PTA. Becky suggested that we discuss that after the budget presentation.

Ricardo Diaz asked Spencer about bilingual students and integration. Spencer explained that bilingual third graders are in classes with an ESL instructor and are pulled out of class for instruction in Spanish. Becky suggested hearing more about this issue later in the school year. Spencer said that Joe Wiemelt, new director of Bilingual and Multicultural Programs would like to come talk to the parents.

Staff Report Bridget Maloney thanked the PTA for the ice cream social.

Molly Jones has requested volunteers to help sort winter clothing, which are made available to students who need them. Contact Molly at mjones@usd116.org.

There is a small group of teachers planning the Time Capsule assembly (October 2 at 2pm) who can use help making a bulletin board as a fund- raiser. Spencer said that there may be a homemade movie in the time capsule.

Craig Huff reported that students are now doing ThinkLink and that the computer lab is up and running.

Judy Diers asked if there is a special focus this year. Spencer responded that last year’s and this year’s goal is to improve reading and math. This year additional goals are improving behavior, increasing community involvement, and integrating bilingual and non-bilingual students. Spencer added that we are a school-wide Title building due to 50% of kids receiving reduced lunch, which means we can give support to any student who needs it allowing for more flexibility for meeting student needs.

President Report

President Becky Mead stated that her number one job is to coordinate what happens in school while she passed around a sheet that explains various programs to participate in and opportunities to volunteer. Her goal is to have at least two coordinators for each event. She welcomes suggestions and ideas.

Becky stated that our teachers use differentiated instruction instead of separating gifted students. Dr. Nancy Hertzog, who works with teachers on differentiation, will be talking about moving from a traditional to a differentiated classroom on September 22 to anyone who is interested.

Membership

Ricky Baldwin stated that the number of PTA members rose from 74 to 85 during the past two years. Perhaps we can shoot for 95 this year. He said that there are many good reasons to join PTA for $7. Ann Fouke explained that the national PTA provides an umbrella for us to have things like the bouncy house at the Fun Fair. The National PTA gets $3.25 and Leal gets $3.75 for administrative funds.

Treasurer’s Report

Treasurer Andrea Hoey presented a “skeleton” budget meaning that it is fluid. If a new budget item comes up during the year the PTA just votes to amend the budget. She reported that we have a healthy budget.

She explained that the Book Fair generates money in the form of books and that the biggest change in the General Operations category is the e-script card from Schnucks.

Leal receives 3 cents for every dollar spent on gas or in the grocery store; last spring we were bringing in $100 each month.

Under the Enrichment category we have a base budget of $300 for a Science Night, which can be modified later.

The $500 for Spanish Enrichment wasn’t spent last year. Becky explained that Kerrie Huizinga, Leal Librarian, has trouble getting Spanish language books. Andrea suggested adding $100 to the budget next year as a yearly expense for the library in addition to $500 for Spanish language books.

Kerrie explained that the Rebecca Caudill Awards program for 3rd and 4th graders statewide includes high quality, popular, and diverse books. Rebecca Caudill was an Urbana resident and has ties to Leal PTA. Lucia Maldonado suggested that Leal families who visit Mexico for the summer bring back some popular books. She also thought that the Mexican and Guatemalan Consulates may give books to schools.

Andrea reported that there is permanent funding for P.E. equipment in the budget.

Ricky moved to approve the budget, Judy seconded, all approved.

Andrea explained that for coordinators who need to spend money on events, there is a black folder in the office for receipts. Please submit these as soon as possible after the event. If you don’t want to be reimbursed, please let her know how much you spent so that we know how much our events cost.

Spencer requested $200 for the Time Capsule Open House. Andrea said that we can put it in the Other category. Ann motioned to spend $200 on the open house. Judy seconded, all approved.

New Business

Science Assembly Proposed

Bridget Maloney requested $250 for two February assemblies with Brian “Fox” Ellis, a storyteller who focuses on nature. Bridget stated that if the PTA cannot fund all of it the Champaign Audubon Society can help. Becky stated that this is a relatively inexpensive assembly. Andrea motioned to fund the assemblies. Amy Ando seconded, all approved.

Bridget reported on a teacher’s grant from Verizon to provide 19 Smart Boards for 19 classes to be permanently installed.

Innisbrook (Ends September 14) Susan Roughton reported that Kristy Higgs is in charge of this gift wrap/chocolate fundraiser, but could not attend. Leal keeps 50% of the amount ordered, which netted Leal $2500 last year. Susan explained how to enter orders online and stated that orders will be accepted until Friday.

Walk-a-thon (October 7)

Judy Diers explained different ways to pledge for this major fundraiser that involves the whole school and promotes exercise.

Scholastic Book Fair

Mary Kate Arend explained that the Book Fair earns books for the library, teachers, and kids who can’t afford a book on their own. Mary Kate would like to give every student a book and plans to cut the wish list that kids make. She would also like to make it simpler without losing sales this year. Andrea suggested selling just books, eliminating posters, pens, etc. Barb Thomas volunteered to co-chair with Mary Kate. Andrea suggested gathering a committee that combines coordinators of the Book Fair, Book Bin, etc.

Afterschool Enrichment Call for Teachers

Becky Mead asked for ideas for Afterschool Enrichment classes. Marianne Alleyne and Amy Ando taught a class last year and would give the planning details of the class to anyone who would want to teach it again this year.

Ann Fouke motioned to adjourn the meeting, Andrea Hooey seconded. Meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.

Respectfully submitted by Carolyn Butterfield, PTA Secretary Attendance: 29
